It’s Moustache Season again!
Yes, that’s right, it’s that time of year. When we put down our razors, and let that Mo grow.
Geeks on Wheels are doing their bit for men’s health by taking part in Movember, and growing a fine set of moustaches during the month of November. Our whole team gets behind this great cause, accepting donations from our customers, friends and family.
Movember is about raising funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men. For more information, and to keep track of our progress with photo updates - visit our Movember Page
The team at Geeks on Wheels would like to congratulate our Hutt based technician Sam and his partner, Kate, on the new addition to their family.
They are now the proud parents of a happy, healthy little baby geek, Aimee. She was born on Tuesday the 18th of October at just after 7pm. After a couple of days at the hospital, they are now at home, celebrating the joys of parenthood and settling into family life.
We wish them all the best in this wonderful new adventure.

We're no longer in the Yellow... book that is!
If there was ever any doubt, the evidence is there in front of me, (and you), and it’s impossible to ignore. With last year’s edition still sitting under my computer screen in its plastic wrapper, the latest Yellow Pages has just been delivered and it’s definitely shrinking! Fewer and fewer businesses are advertising in the Yellow Pages because fewer and fewer people are opening them. Instead we turn to our computers or phones and search the Internet when we require a product or service.
The Yellow Pages have printed a small "In The Car" version for those of us on the move, but the print is so fine that you need a microscope to read it!! The maps in the front seem like a good idea, but many of us now have a GPS in their car, and no need for a map. We know that more than 50% of mobile phones are Internet capable, and this number is rising every day.
So in a bold move… Geeks on Wheels have decided to embrace the changing times by advertising more online than in the Yellow Pages book. And if you're reading this... it only proves the point!

Loud Shirt Success
We took to the streets, turning heads, and stopping traffic with our seriously LOUD shirts. After being surprised by our bright, colourful replacements for our normally black uniform, our customers supported us by donating over $750 for Loud Shirt Day.
Loud Shirt Day is the annual appeal of The Hearing House and the Southern Cochlear Implant Paediatric Programme.
Congratulations to the team, and thanks again for everyone who contributed!

Geeks on Wheels go LOUD!!!
On Friday 16th September, our Geek team will put away their uniforms, and dig out their brightest, most outrageous loud shirts. We’ll stand out, proudly raising money for deaf New Zealand children by taking part in Loud Shirt Day.
The money raised goes towards funding of specialised therapy for deaf children with hearing aids and implants; this therapy will help the children learn to interpret sounds, and ultimately to speak.
Please support us in our effort to change the lives of deaf New Zealand children.
Every month we provide answers to readers’ questions in NetGuide magazine.
If you have a technical question for our helpdesk, then send us an email to: helpdesk@geeksonwheels.co.nz.
If you’re lucky, your question will be answered and printed in next month’s issue of Netguide.
Netguide magazine is available from most major booksellers and magazine outlets.

Don't fall victim to the latest phone scams.
You’ve probably heard all about this in the news by now, but everyone needs to be warned. These scammers call unsuspecting victims at home, sometimes impersonating legitimate IT companies or Internet Service Providers, then try to gain access to your computer. Unfortunately these con artists are very good at what they do, they will attempt to gain your trust, and then try to talk you into giving them your credit card details to pay for their services.
It pays to be suspicious in this case. Make sure you don’t give out ANY personal information, especially not usernames, passwords, and credit card details. If you do think your computer has been compromised, then be sure to have it checked out by a computer technician, and change all your passwords. New Zealanders have lost over $750,000 to online scams in the past year!!
At Geeks on Wheels we will never call to ask for your passwords, or request to access to your PC remotely. In fact, we feel so strongly about the importance of providing a personal service (especially given these scams) that it is our company policy never to remotely access our customer’s computers.
For more information or to report a scam visit Consumer Affairs.

The annual NetGuide web awards were a success last night, with 26 categories there was something for everyone.
We were lucky enough to attend the gala event at the Hilton on the Auckland waterfront hosted by Jeremy Elwood, New Zealand Comedian. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening, with most continuing on to the after party at The Corporate Box sponsored by Orcon.
The team at Geeks on Wheels would like to congratulate all the winners, in particular Orcon who won best ISP, the category sponsored by Geeks on Wheels.

New Zealand Anti-Piracy Legislation.
There are two basic ways to download music and movies – the legal way, and the illegal way. If the type of downloading you have been taking part in falls into the second category, then this is something you really should know.
New Zealand lawmakers have recently passed a law that will allow for strict monitoring of file-sharing. A ‘Three Strike’ method will be implemented where the Internet Service Provider will send warnings on the first two offences, and any further infringements could result in a fine of up to $15,000. In addition to the fines, the piracy could also lead to a suspension of the offender’s Internet service for six months. These new laws come into effect from 1st September 2011.
We at Geeks on Wheels would like to invite you to visit our stand at BLED 31 in the Bledisloe building for the 2011 Fieldays Exhibition, in Hamilton, from the 15th to the 18th of June. Some people might wonder why a collection of Internet addicted, USB carrying, technophiles like ourselves would setup stage at the Southern Hemisphere’s largest agribusiness exhibition. Well if you run into said ponderers, you can tell them that amidst the horse transports, combine harvesters, and John-Deeres, Geeks on Wheels will be answering technical questions, proudly displaying our new car design, and raffling off free appointments all because we want everyone to know that our mission to provide the best service in New Zealand applies to EVERYONE!
These days every Tom, Dick and Marry has a computer and as such they are bound to run into a problem or need some advice about it. We would be in neglect of our creed if we were not there to greet the 120,000+ people of Fieldays and let them know that we want to be the only number they need to call for their computer concerns.
So rock up in your gumboots, jandals or bare feet and give us a holler. We want to meet you, discuss any questions you may have about your computer and show you why we are the number one mobile technical service in New Zealand.

Data has never been tougher!
All of our technicians know that one of the core principles of safe and reliable computing is having a backup of your data. Most of the time this means having a duplicate copy of your information on a second device (like an external hard drive). But what if your hard drive gets stolen, smashed, burnt or (as recently in Christchurch) buried under rubble?
In an effort to deliver a smash/fire/theft/rubble proof solution for backing up important data, Geeks on Wheels has teamed up with Back IT Up Mate, a New Zealand based company that specializes in online backups. Geeks on Wheels is the preferred installer of the Back IT Up Mate solution and can get you up and running in thirty minutes. If you are worried about the initial backup eating your bandwidth for the month, we can ship your data on a USB stick to the Back IT Up Mate office where they will upload your data to your account for you. As if supplying a fantastic backup solution was not enough, Back IT Up Mate has also pledged to donate 20 percent of it’s backup subscriptions over the next three months to the Christchurch earthquake recovery fund through the Silverstream Lions Club in Wellington.

What’s black and white and read all over?
The new Geeks on Wheels, Geek Mobile is what! Figuring our customers didn’t have to be the only ones getting upgrades, we have revamped our look. With our new black, white and red design, our cars look cooler than an x-wing storming a death-star. All of our lettering has been emblazoned on the vehicles with a high-tech reflective surface, emphasizing that not only do we stand out from the competition, we do from the rest of traffic as well.
I gotta say, it’s good to be a Geek, especially one who rides in style.

Rates increase, still best value service in NZ!
Our mission at Geeks on Wheels is to provide the best value service in New Zealand. We have maintained our rate since June 2008, however due to economic circumstances, including the recent rise in fuel prices, it has been necessary to review our rate for the first time in almost three years. As of Monday 21st February our rates will be increasing. We shall continue to provide our services at an affordable rate that reflects both our high quality service and professionalism.
